Some page ends chipped with loss. Marginal staining. Owner's name on title page. Sold with all faults. Born in 1707, Pringle studied medicine at Leiden and Paris before practicing in Edinburgh. In 1744 he became physician general to the British army and he was present at the battle of Culloden. In 1752 the first of the many editions of Pringle's Diseases of the Army was published. In the volume Pringle identified hospitals as a major cause of sickness and began to think in terms of septic and antiseptic. Pringle felt that fevers, dysentery, and jail fever were the three most prevalent and fatal diseases affecting armies and although he was wrong about the way they were transmitted (he blamed putrid air) his recommendations for prevention helped to control epidemics. He authored numerous books and served as an editor of academic magazines in the history of science. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover. Bound in the original full leather with maroon title label stamped 'Rush's Pringle.' Leather is edgeworn, faded, scuffed and stained, but is still holding together perfectly well. Original hinges still intact. Ownership name on front endpaper in blue ink says 'John Bush MD Vassalboro Maine, Great grandfather of Mrs. Margaret Bush Higgins Townsend Mass.' Title page dated 1812. xlvii + 411 pages. Paper toned from age, but text block tight, pages clean. A few illustrations in the text. Benjamin Rush signed the Declaration of Independence on behalf of Pennsylvania along with Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, George Clymer and a handful of others. This book was first published in England in the 1760s, but not in the US until this edition. Please email with questions or to request photos.
