Add to basketCouverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Edition originale. Walker place Corvisart à côté d'Auenbrugger parmi les 10 pionniers de l'examen clinique ("Ten individuals are responsible for the development of modern physical diagnosis: Hippocrates, Vesalius, Morgagni, Sydenham, Auenbrugger, Corvisart, Laennec, Louis, Mueller, and Osler"). FIRST EDITION of Corvisart's translation of Auenbrugger's work, which expanded the original 95 pages into 440 pages with the addition of Corvisart's notes and comments. Corvisart "really created cardiac symptomatology and made possible the differentiation between cardiac and pulmonary disorders. His translation of Auenbrugger's book on percussion resulted in the universal adoption of that procedure" (Garrison-Morton 2672). Norman 83. Heirs of Hippocrates 955. Osler Cat. 1866.

His little book met with a cold reception, while a French translation by Rozière de la Chassagne in 1770 attracted little notice. But Auenbrugger lived to see the appearance in 1808 of J. N. Corvisart's classic translation of the book, after which the value of percussion was universally recognized. It should be noted that recognition did not occur until nearly 50 years after Auenbrugger first published" (Garrison-Morton).REFERENCE: Garrison-Morton 2672 ; Heirs of Hippocrates 955; Norman 83; Osler 1866; Waller 526; Wellcome II, p. 70.

Auenbrugger (1722-1809) was head physician to the Hospital of the Holy Trinity at Vienna. First Edition of Corvisart's translation and a great medical classic. First published in 1761, a prior translation into French had already been made by Roziere de la Chassagne in 1770, having attracted little notice. It wasn't until Corvisart's translation came along with his extensive commentary based on his application of the method, growing a 95 page booklet into a 440 page volume, that percusssion, along with auscultation, soon became universally adopted in the medical world. Garisson & Morton, n°2672. Norman n °83. Waller n° 526. Wellcome II, p. 395.
