Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Robert Simson: Notes Critical and Geometrical. [BOUND WITH:] Euclid's Data. [BOUND WITH:] The Elements of Plane and Spherical Geometry . Edinburgh: Printed for C. Nourse. and J. Balfour, MDCCLXXXVII [1787]. Hardcover 8vo in recent paper-covered boards and spine, printed spine label; [2], 297-512 p.; with three engraved folding plates, numerous in-text wood engravings; interleaved with blanks throughout. Though each of the three parts is complete in itself, they were intended to be bound with, and act as supplements to, Simson's Elements of Euclid, hence the pagination begins with p. 297. For some reason, the original/early owner had these latter parts bound together and then interleaved them with blank leaves (every other leaf is blank), presumably for taking notes and making calculations, neither of which he or she ever got around to doing. Some offsetting to the folding plates, mild toning to the leaves with very occasional light spotting; otherwise quite clean and fresh and firmly bound in a sharp, handsome modern binding. Robert Simson (1687-1768) was professor of mathematics at the University of Glasgow. His version of the Elements was long the standard text of Euclid in English.
