Hardcover. Condition: Good. Eugène Ionesco was for many years the central figure of The Theatre of the Absurd" This book contains his own ideas about the theatre and in a series of essays explores his feelings about his plays, recovers correspondence with critics e.g. Kenneth Tynan, Philip Toynbee, reproduces interviews he had given and describes why he wrote plays at all. A fascinating collection of erudite short pieces granting insights into the theatre of the sixties. Originally published by Gallimard as "Notes et contre-notes" this is the first translation. A good clean hardback copy complete with dust jacket. The dust jacket has some bumping and some small tears to it, inside the pages are clean, bright and well bound, looks like it has hardly been read.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. A very scarce full set of Ionesco's Plays and Notes volume. The first five vols and vol Seven and the Notes volume are paperbacks. Vols Six and Eight are both hardbacks and first editions of the translated editions. Going through each volume in turn very briefly: Vol. One is the 1965 third reprint, 1965 in good condition, torn spine paper at the foot of the spine, sun discoloured card covers, especially to white areas of spine edge and back cover, toned at the page block edge. It is probably the least good condition of the set but still a decent copy. Vol. Two is v similar with brighter covers, 1962 first reprint. Vol. Three is brighter with no tearing to spine, 1960, first p/b edition. Vol. Four is similar with a small piece of the spine paper missing at the foot and a slight water stain across the top edge and inside the first spreads; 1964 second reprint. Vol. Five similar with no tears but a glass or cup ring stain to the front cover; 1963 first p/b edition. Vol. Six is a hardback first impression, 1965 in vg clean condition, v slightly knocking to fore edge corners; the dj is clean, albeit slightly edge worn and toned, not price clipped. Vol. Seven is a nice bright copy with a little toning to covers and page block edge; 1968, first p/b edition. Vol. Eight is a lovely bright copy, first impression, 1971 with fresh looking cloth boards and a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Notes and Counter Notes volume is in sound, clean condition, albeit a little toned to the card covers and page block edges, 1964, first p/b edition. This volume is an ex library copy with a small library label at the foot of the spine and a small stamp inside which is hardly noticeable. There are no wallets or labels inside to ruin it! In all a terrific full set which is hard to find.
