The Apocryphal books are included in the Old Testament.Manuel de Sá (1530-1596), b. Vila do Conde, Kingdom of Portugal; d. Arona, Duchy of Milan. A celebrated theologian and lecturer, he at age 15 joined the Society of Jesus, and soon after taught philosophy, first at Coimbra, and later at Gandia. In 1557 he became one of the early professors of the Roman College, and lectured on the prophesies of Hosea and on the Summa of Thomas Aquinas, and was afterwards chair of exegesis in the College. He was appointed by Pope Pius V as a member of the commission to produce an authentic version of the Septuagint. His exegetical works are:Scholia in Quatuor Evangelia(Antwerp, 1596), andNotationes in totam Scripturam Sacram(Antwerp, 1598), both of which passed through several editions. His aim was to present a literal sense of the Holy Scriptures; he was accused of inaccuracies by Protestant scholars. "Being called to Rome in 1557, he spent his time in teaching, preaching, and editing a new version of the Bible, which appeared during the pontificate of Sixtus V. He also founded many religious houses in Upper Italy. After residing for a time at Genoa, he returned to the convent of Arona, where he died, Dec. 30, 1596." - M'Clintock & Strong, Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature (1894).
