Dust jacket is wrapped in a mylar covering, has mild wear along spine tail edge, has a bend along the spine, and has mild finger-staining. Textblock has mild age-toning along edges. Contains a golden silk bookmark ribbon attached to the spine head. Signed flat by Philip Pullman on title page. JW consignment. Shelved in Case 8. Philip Pullman was born on the 16th of October, 1946 in Norwich England. Due to his father's position in the RAF, Pullman frequently traveled, living briefly in the now defunct state of Southern Rhodesia. After his father's death in 1954, Philip Pullman moved to North Wales with his mother and step-father where he spent much of his formative years. It is here that Pullman discovered comic books, in particular Superman and Batman, which alongside the illustrations of William Blake and the work Paradise lost by John Milton, would become great influences on Pullmans works. Perhaps his greatest influence, however, would be his work on school plays during his time teaching. Pullman would start work on 'His Dark Materials' in 1993, releasing 'Northern Lights' in 1995, winning both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, which encouraged him to leave teaching and write full time, as he does into today. Since the release of the trilogy, Pullman has gone on to write 2 volumes of the planned 'the Book of Dust' trilogy, a companion to 'His Dark Materials'. He is also patron to the Palestine Festival of Literature and Shakespeare Schools Festival charitable organizations. 'His Dark Materials' was originally published as a 3-volume trilogy consisting of 'Northern Lights' 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass', and first published from 1995-2000. All three volumes are collected in this single-volume collection of the trilogy. The series itself, while marketed as a young-adult series, was written with no particular audience in mind, with elements of fantasy and science-fiction coming together in a tale which explores physics, philosophy, and theology. Outside of the pages, the series is known for Philip Pullman's statement that it is meant to commend humanity for what the poet John Milton coined "original sin" in his work 'Paradise Lost'. This has earned the series some controversy for "criticizing religion" 1384118. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.

David Scutt and Tom Sanderson (illustrator). His Dark Materials Trilogy: Large 8vos., 3 vols; burgundy, green and black linson boards, lettered in gilt to spines; Vol II with knife device gilt to upper board; Vol III titled to upper; all in the highly decorative pictorial dustwrappers designed by David Scutt; Vol III with coloured endpapers; pp. [x], 3-399, [ix]; [viii], 341, [iii]; [viii], 548, [iv]; with decorative devices and quotations throughout all volumes; a lovely, bright set; Vol I slightly faded along backstrip of wrapper; Vol II and III lightly spotted to the upper edge, extending slightly to fore-edge and prelims in the latter; some mild creasing to wrappers at spine tips, with some associated pushing to the boards beneath; otherwise aside from very minor marking and shelfwear, a smart set of this celebrated fantasy series. First editions, first printings all, with full number lines 1-10 where called for. Pullman was still teaching full time when he began to write 'The Northern Lights', set in his home town of Oxford. With the overarching title of the series taken directly from Milton's 'Paradise Lost', Pullman cites his influences as Blake, Socrates, and Heinrich von Kleist, and was inspired to write about Daemons (animal companions which are the character's inner selves in physical form) after seeing Leonardo da Vinci's 'Lady with an Ermine', showing the figure holding an animal in her arms. The trilogy follows Lyra Belacqua and her daemon Pan as they track down stolen children, navigate parallel universes and encounter such characters as witches, aeronauts and armoured bears along the way. The Book of Dust Trilogy: Large 8vos., 3 vols; black cloth lettered and decorated respectively in sparkling gold, metallic red and bronze with titles and quotations; decorative endpapers; Vol III with gold ribbon marker; all in their respective unclipped dustwrappers with cover designs by Tom Sanderson; pp. [xii], 3-545, [v]; [xii], 686, [vi]; [xiv], 5-621, 1.00 25/11/2025 [ix]; all books near-fine, spine ends occasionally pushed, light dirt-mark to the fore-edge of Vol II; Vol III purchased new and thus fine. First editions, first printings all, with full number lines 1-10. Vol II neatly signed by Pullman in blue ink; Vol III the Exclusive edition, together with publisher's promotional bookmark loosely laid in. The parallel trilogy of novels centering around the character of Malcolm Polstead and his dĉmon Asta. Lyra's Oxford: 12mo., bright red cloth with onlaid pictorial label to upper board; spine lettered in black; lower board lettered and decorated with map of England in black; pale grey endpapers; pp. [x], 3-48, [viii], with numerous woodcut devices, vignettes and illustrations throughout by John Lawrence, as well as a folding colour map and [vi] black and white ephemeral travel pages to rear; map with tiny corner crease, else fine. First edition, first printing, with full number line 1-10. This copy signed by Pullman in blue ink to the title page. A novella focusing once again on the titular protagonist. A lovely copy. Once upon a time in the North: 12mo., navy-blue cloth onlaid with white illustrated title labels in white and gold; the former printed with text and woodblock engraving in colour by John Lawrence; pale blue endpapers; pp. [viii], 95, [ix]; with numerous illustrations and vignettes in black and white throughout, all by Lawrence, as well as reproduced passages of handwriting, diagrams and newspaper clippings; a 'Peril of the Pole' game folded and enclosed in pocket to rear of text, in full colour, as well as an unused wind compass; a very good copy. First edition. Another prequel to the trilogy, which describes the initial meeting between much-loved characters Lee Scoresby, the balloonist, and Iorek Byrnison, the armoured bear. Together this multi-volume set comprises as complete a collection as possible of Pullman's best-known series, which was written over a period of almost twenty years. Scarce thus.

It is vibrant and bright and in charming condition, illustrated by David Scutt. The trilogy was marketed for young adults, although Pullman has stated he did not write it with a specific audience in mind. The fantasy series is critically acclaimed and functions in part as a retelling and inversion of John Milton's 'Paradise Lost', with Pullman commending humanity for original sin, which Milton perceived as its most tragic failing. There was some controversy over the trilogy and its criticism of religion, but in spite of that, by 2024 more than 22 million copies had been sold in more than 50 countries, and it has been translated into 40 different languages. The first instalment was translated to the big screen in 2007, with the title of the American version 'The Golden Compass', directed by Chris Weitz and starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Dakota Blue Richards. The trilogy was then turned into a tv series in 2019-2022 for BBC One and HBO, receiving positive reviews. This is a truly lovely first edition set of this popular trilogy, a rare find with all three signed by the jacket illustrator and the third instalment signed by the author as well. This would make a fabulous addition to any modern firsts collection. Please contact us for more photos. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. UNBOUND. Philip Pullman - À Outrance Ruscombe Art Edition. Philip Pullman & Joan Byers. This special edition illustrated letterpress was commissioned in 2009 and is taken from A Outrance in Philip Pullman's novel, Northern Lights. This book tells of the great fight between the bear kings, as chronicled in Northern Lights, with a special introduction by the author. Some of the world's finest designer bookbinders were commissioned to produce fifteen individual hand-bound copies, of which this is one. All offer exceptionally beautiful one-off examples of how each artist interpreted the book. Each has been meticulously printed letterpress by hand on traditional cast iron Heidelberg Press, one sheet and one colour at a time on paper handmade at the famous Ruscombe Mill in France. This copy was exhibited in Oxford University's Bodleian Library. Unbound reflects the vast, open white space being freed from evil. Full printed alum goat skin in ivory white with raised images of the two fighting bears, Iorek Byrnison, on the front cover and Iofur Raknison on the back. White leather headbands and black leather inner hinges. The black endpapers have the embossed image of a bear on the lower corners and are slightly cockled, reflecting the eerie cold north. The edges are uncut to match the handmade paper and add to the ruggedness of the story. Joan chose black and white to reflect the fight between good and evil . The box is covered in soft black leather and lined with black felt. In addition to signing the book, Philip Pullman has inscribed this copy with a line of text. Each volume is encased in its own slipcase and accompanied by a set of six woodcut images used within the book. Each print is signed by the author and artist and is produced in a format suitable for framing.
