Hardcover. First edition. This copy is signed and inscribed by the author (on the page after the copyright page). A fantasy novel originally written for the annual writing competition National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) over the span of three competitions. The novel has a nonlinear narrative written from multiple viewpoints. A phantasmagorical fairy tale set near an historical Victorian London in a wandering magical circus that is open only from sunset to sunrise. Le Cirque des Reves (The Circus of Dreams) features such wonders and "etheral enigmas" as a blooming garden made all of ice, acrobats soaring without a net, and a vertical cloud maze where patrons who get lost simply step off and float gently to the floor. The circus has no set schedule, appearing without warning and leaving without notice; they travel in a train disguised as an ordinary coal transport. A network of devoted fans styling themselves "reveurs" (dreamers") develops around the circus; they identify to each other by adding a splash of red to garb that otherwise matches the characteristic black and white of the circus tents. The magical nature of the circus is disguised under the guise of legerdemain: the illusionist truly transforms her jacket into a raven and the fortune teller truly reads the uncertain future, and both are applauded for their ingenuity. 387 pages. A nearly fine copy in a nearly fine clean dust jacket.

Several small circular impressions on a couple of back pages. Erin Morgenstern (born July 8, 1978) is an American multimedia artist and the author of two fantasy novels. The Night Circus (2011) was published in more than a dozen languages by 2013 and won the annual Locus Award for Best First Novel. She is a 2012 recipient of an Alex Award. Her second book, The Starless Sea, was published in 2019. Morgenstern's debut novel, The Night Circus is a phantasmagorical fairy tale of magic and romance set in an historical late 19th century London. The book has drawn comparison with the Harry Potter series, as well as the works of Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury, Susanna Clarke, and Steven Millhauser. Summit Entertainment has contracted the film rights. In an interview with the School Library Journal, Morgenstern describes the short, self-contained chapters as reflecting the myriad tents of the circus, and the black and white with a splash of red motif as showing dangerous passion simmering just below the surface. The Night Circus was nominated for the 2011 Goodreads Fantasy Award, and spent seven weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements.
