About the book >.>.> The charm of his miniatures, carried out with accomplished craftsmanship and superb artistic touch, is well known; less known is the remarkable influence which Hilliard exercised on his contempor-aries, an influence which far transcends the limited sphere of miniature painting and goldsmiths' work. The purpose of this study, founded on intensive research into the history of painting in England in the sixteenth century, is to indicate Hilliard's position in the development of English art of that period by giving a detailed account of the life and work of this great artist. I am greatly indebted to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths who by their generous encouragement and support made possible the publication of this study. They further kindly granted permission to study their records and other documents and thereby enabled me to ascertain biographical facts about Hilliard which hitherto were unknown, facts which established his close con-nection with the Company's activities and the goldsmiths' craft.
