Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive analysis of human nature, physiognomy, and different human dispositions. The author, who himself was a doctor, draws on his extensive research in physiology and philosophy to assert that it is possible to read the character of a person through the physical traits of their head and face. In a similar vein to similar books from Antiquity through the Victorian era, the author uses detailed diagrams and descriptions to map the "moral" and "physical" attributes of a person onto their physical characteristics. Through the analysis of these physical traits, the author attempts to establish a basis for scientific physiognomy. The book is ambitious in scope and comprehensively considers the subject of physiognomy. It is sure to appeal to readers interested in human nature and history of science. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Seller: Cleveland Book Company, ABAA, Rocky River, OH, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Octavo, 238pp., illustrated. Appears to be a Scottish printing of this work by the American physiognomist. A good copy only in the publisher's maroon cloth. Cloth evenly soiled and scuffed, and worn at the extremities. Scrunch at one gutter near the middle of the page block. Nevertheless, an intact, internally clean copy, with the extensive chart marked up at the rear, apparently by Simms himself, presumably at a lecture (it's possible that the pencil markings were done by Simms, or perhaps by someone else in his presence). A scarce and profusely illustrated volume of pseudoscience. Physiognomy was the externalized version of phrenology, attributing various complex personality characteristics to physical facial features, shapes, and the rest. To the reader's great surprise, positive characteristics correlate highly with Anglo-Saxons, while negative characteristics correlate highly with Irishmen, native and Indigenous peoples of many races, etc.
