Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). A scarce, second edition of Robert Boyle"s important scientific work. This volume is the first appearance of Boyle"s Law. Boyle worked hard to devise improvements on Otto von Guericke"s air pump or vacuum chamber. His end result was the "machina Boyleana" or "Pneumatical Engine" which was finished in 1659. His account of the work was in this work. ESTC reference no R26549. Prior owner"s inscription to the title page, John Blakey. Plate at page II has been repaired and laid down. This is the second edition, published two years after the first. It contains the first announcement of Boyle"s law, being the relation of pressure and volume in a gas. This was Boyle"s most important achievement in experimental physics. Retaining the two engraved plates. The first plate has been repaired and laid down on linen. Collated: this work is lacking the half-title, quires N-2A in part I and the medial and final blanks of M4 and O4 in part III. A slightly compromised copy of this important work. With 'A Defence of the Doctrine touching the Spring and Weight of the Air' having a separate title. In a contemporary calf binding. Rebacked, with the original boards preserved. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the board edges. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Title page has been laid down. Occasional manuscript notes to margins. Damp staining to the bottom of leaves, and occasional tide mark not affecting the text. Chip to the plate at page 50 of the second part. Worming from 2H1-end. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good. book.

Quarter Leather. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy in new quarter leather binding with raised bands to spine and title label and gilt date, and marbled boards. Complete with 8 fold-out plates, and decorative head and tailpieces. A continuation of Robert Boyle's work on gases published in 1660. He was a significant experimental physicist, best known for the formulation of Boyle's Law in 1662. It is now known that this also drew on work by Richard Towneley and Henry Power who has been working on the study of gases from 1653. Their work was affected by Boyle's 1660 publication and they completed their experiment in 1661, forwarding their results to the Royal Society who passed it on to 'interested persons' including Boyle. Boyle credited Towneley with the discovery, but the published equation was Boyle's and became Boyle's Law. This work is an update on Boyle's continuing experimentation. [ref Webster, Nature Vol 197 Jan 1965]. Contents: title; preface 12pp; fold out plates I & II (II bound before I); advertisements 5pp leading into errata - which have an old cross-hatched ink crossing - out. They are still readable; half title to the 1st Part; text 1-176; half title to Notes; advertisement 2pp; text 181-198 Finis; contents 10pp; fold out plates III-VIII. The contents are very clean and in good order with light toning to page edges. There is a small repaired tear to the attachment to Plate I; a number of scholarly notes - mainly referencing figures on plates; a ragged bottom edge to p193; darkened and slightly nibbled top edge to Plate II; darkened top edge Plate VII; and slight nick to top edge Plate VIII. Old quarto size - 21 cm x 16.5 cm.

3 parts in 1 volume, 4to, pp. (xvi), 207; (xii), 122, (2) blank; (viii), 86, 85?98, (2) blank, 2 engraved plates (1 folding). Without the blank leaf m4 in part 3. Half-title, separate title-page to each part. Tear without loss in folding plate, two small wormtracks in extreme upper corner of second part diminishing to a single wormhole, otherwise a very nice copy. Contemporary calf, rebacked, red edges, fore-edges of front endpapers a little ragged. Second edition but the first announcement of Boyle?s law, relating to the inverse proportion of the volume and pressure of a gas, which was Boyle?s most important achievement in physics and one of the greatest contributions to physical science. It was the first scientific law to be formulated that related to the properties of materials. Not only does Boyle here enunciate a fundamental law, but he supports it with the evidence of verifiable experiments. It exemplifies perfectly the methodology of what is now known as the experimental method of science: hypothesis tested by experimental proof, which Boyle was among the first to adopt. To this second edition Boyle added a defence of his views against attacks by Hobbes and Franciscus Linus, among others. ?This second edition (here cited) is particularly important for what Boyle called an ?hypothesis? but what we know as ?Boyle?s Law?: that the volume of air in a confined space varies inversely as the pressure. He demonstrated this by much experimental detail: with experiments on rarefaction performed by others, including Hooke, and on compression performed by himself? (PMM).
