August 1877 in Bern - 23. September 1961), Maler, Grafiker und Schriftsteller, auf Vorsatz. - «Leonhard Ragaz, 28.7.1868 Tamins - 6.12.1945 Zürich, ref., von Tamins. [.] Nach dem Besuch der Schulen in Tamins und Chur studierte R. Theologie in Basel, Jena und Berlin. 1890-93 war er Pfarrer am Heinzenberg, 1895-1902 in Chur und 1902-08 am Basler Münster, dazwischen 1893-95 Lehrer an der Kantonsschule Chur. Schon in Chur entwickelte der theologisch liberale Pfarrer ein Sensorium für soziale Anliegen. Unter dem Einfluss von Christoph Blumhardt wurde für ihn die Botschaft vom Reich Gottes für diese Welt zur theol. und polit. Herausforderung. 1906 war R. an der Entstehung der religiös-sozialen Bewegung sowie an der Gründung der Zeitschrift "Neue Wege" beteiligt, die er von 1921 bis zu seinem Tod als Hauptredaktor betreute. Ab 1908 wirkte er als Prof. für systemat. und prakt. Theologie an der Univ. Zürich. Die entscheidenden Schritte der Annäherung an die Arbeiterbewegung tat er, indem er sich 1903 in Basel mit den streikenden Bauarbeitern solidarisierte und 1912 in Zürich den Generalstreik unterstützte. In der internat. Bewegung des religiösen Sozialismus wurde er zur zentralen Figur. Gegen marxist. und staatszentrierte Ansätze vertrat R. einen föderalist., genossenschaftl. und pazifist. Sozialismus. 1921 trat er von seiner Professur zurück und widmete sich der Bildungsarbeit im Zürcher Arbeiterquartier Aussersihl und in der religiös-sozialen Bewegung. Als Präs. der Schweiz. Zentralstelle für Friedensarbeit war er in der Zwischenkriegszeit einer der Exponenten der antimilitarist. Friedensbewegung in der Schweiz. Als die Sozialdemokrat. Partei 1935 die militär. Landesverteidigung befürwortete, trat R. aus der Partei aus (Beitritt 1913). Schon früh suchte er den Dialog mit dem Judentum und lehnte den Antisemitismus sowie den Nationalsozialismus ebenso scharf ab wie anpasser. Tendenzen in der Schweiz, gegen die er die Stimme der prophet. Kritik erhob. 1941-44 liess R. die "Neuen Wege" illegal erscheinen, weil er nicht bereit war, sich der verordneten Vorzensur zu unterziehen. Mit seiner Reich-Gottes-Theologie, die stets verbunden war mit polit. Engagement, nahm er die Ansätze der Befreiungstheologie vorweg» (HLS). 600 gr.
