Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21.5 x 31 cm; 2,456 Kg; 564 pages with black and white illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear. The dust jacket has edge wear, and scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior with minor sign…s of wear. Good condition overall.; The famous Hindson collection of Netsuke, sold at Sotheby's in a series of seven sales between 1967 and 1969, is the mos important and all-embracing of its kind ever to have come up for auction. The sales led to a greatly increased international interest in this Japanese miniature art form. Neil K. Davey, who has been responsible for the documenting and cataloguing of Sotheby's Japanese sales for over twelve years, has founded his book on the information he acquired while working on the items in the M.T. Hindson collection. He has supplemented this information with a considerable amount of further material based on other collections, so that the coverage of Netsuke is more complete than that of any other book previously published on the subject. He surveys 1,300 representative pieces in two main sections; in the first section the signed Netsuke are dealt with, divided into different schools; in the second section the unsigned and unattributable Netsuke are categorized by subject matter. Both are fully illustrated with over 1,200 and some illustrations of the artist's actual signatures. Full details of artists, schools and subjects are given. The introduction describes the general background of Netsuke and comments on materials, techniques and terminology. The book includes a glossary of Japanese terms, and an index of all known Netsuke artists, with facts about the type of work for which they are recognized and their names in Japanese characters, where the artist is known.; Reviews of the First Edition: "Such a comprehensive work with every item illustrated, some with signature details as well, will make this a standard reference for many years to came". Museums Journal.; "Mr Davey's book is more than an ordinary art book: it is a rich source of information and will be used by Netsuke collectors as an encyclopedia." Times Literary Supplement.; "The serious collector will find this volume a welcome addition to his library." Antiques Monthly.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A clean and crisp hardback first edition in a clean pictorial dust jacket, which is protected by a non-adhesive transparent sleeve. There are a few lines of minor rubbing to the blue cloth on the upper cover (pictured), and a neat previous ownership…name (and initial) on the front free endpaper, but the binding of this substantial volume is sound and secure and the contents are clean. The clean protected dust jacket has had the printed price cut out from thee bottom of its front inside flap, but overall is in nice condition. Overall, a very good hardback first edition, but with a neat previous ownership name on the front free endpaper.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Blue linen-like cloth on boards with stamped and bright gilt lettering to spine. Book is tight and square, despite size (556 pp, 8.5" x 12") and particularly sharp-cornered. Totally free of any markings or flaws inside and out. Book is Fine or better…. Unclipped Dust Jacket has a price sticker of $101 but unsure if that was a prior bookseller. Pictorial DJ has full page color photo on back, 8 smaller photos on front. Some very minor scuffing to bottom of spine, otherwise DJ would be fine. Near Fine as is. Stated as the Revised Edition, with 296 new illustrations, including 182 in color, with a foreword by W.W. Winkworth. This is based on the world-class collection of Mark T. Hindson, who started collecting in the 1940's. His collection was auctioned by Sotheby's in two auctions of 1967 and 1969. Filled with photographs and divided by different schools of Netsuke artists, the book is the standard to this day. The rear of the book contains indexes, lists of known artists, original auction selling prices for the pieces, and other bibliographic data.
