First Edition
Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A terrific collection of four complete Quarterly Navy Lists, a comprehensive directory of officers and ships of the Royal Navy. Rare to find completed years. This set offers four complete Quarterly Navy Lists, with issues bound together.January-October 1833; January-October 1836; January-October 1844; January-October 1845.Bound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards. Original wraps bound in to 1844 and 1845. 1833 rebacked, with contemporary boards and new spine. Though it states 1832-1833 to the spine (likely due to the first quarterly stating 'Corrected to the 20th December, 1832', really this would have been published in January, 1833, as evident by the volumes that have their original wraps with this detail. The Navy List, orThe Monthly Navy List was an encyclopaedic publication issued on an almost unfailing monthly basis which listed the officers, ships, ports and stations and assignments of theRoyal Navy,Royal Australian Navy, andRoyal Canadian Navy.An invaluable tool which provides much of thedata on ship captaincies and when various men were promoted. The first issue of The Navy List, published "By Authority" of the Admiralty by John Murray appeared in 1814.There were alsoMonthly Naval Listsissued for the months when aQuarterly Navy Listwas not published. It is rare to find complete years of the quarterly issues such as this, and therefore a notably desirable set of naval history. Bound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards. Original wraps bound in to 1844 and 1845. 1833 rebacked, with contemporary boards and new spine.Externally, boards to 1833 are thus the most worn of the set, with chipping to the front board leather and scuffing to the boards. 1836 is only lightly rubbed in comparison. 1844 and 1845 are excellent. Bookplate of one Richard Campbell to all but 1844 front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with small contemporary amendments made in red ink to A2 of 1833. Light spotting to the endpapers. Very Good. book.
