In 1528, Panfilo de Narvaez landed with four hundred men, including his treasurer, Cabez de Vaca, near Tampa Bay, Florida. The explorers became mired in tropical swamps, failed to obtain sufficient food, encountered hostile Indians, and, most fatally, lost contact with their ships. In desperation, they abandoned Florida. Eight years later and after a journey across the sourthern United States, de Vaca and three companions, the only survivors, met a Spanish patrol in Mexico. The book includes: a Publisher's Preface; a table of contents; a list of illustrations; an Historical Introduction by Harold Augenbraum; and an index.
