Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. This is the story of an accomplishment by the black people of North Carolina of which they should indeed be proud. At a time when any black adult had been born into slavery, and ahead of all but one group of whites, they responded to the need of orphaned and destitute children, sometimes against what must have seemed at times almost insuperable odds. Although for a time they were forced to rely very heavily on funds from a predominantly white legislature--a book published in 1940 by black Baptists boldly states that the State took over the orphanage.--this has never in fact been true, and today the Home is increasingly making its autonomy clear. It is a black institution and belongs not to the State but to the black people of North Carolina. I feel privileged to have been asked to tell its story.
