Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Format, quarto, 237mm. Physical description, xli, 292. The contents are clean, couple of gatherings are slightly pulled. Dark brown sand grain cloth backed boards slightly soiled and rubbed, corners bumped, the upper cover with a game position, Paulsen v Morphy, in gilt. White endpapers, Head of the upper hinge cracked, previous owners bookplate on the front pastedown, previous owner's names in ink and a pencil note on the front endpaper. Overall, a near very good copy, of a book that is a cornerstone of any collection of an important chess book library, and not often seen for sale. The book includes the games from his match with Tschigorin, all annotated by himself. Betts 14-1. The second part , which is also very rarely seen for sale was published in 1895 (Betts 14-6).
