Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of letters by The Author of Common Sense, first published in March 1780. The first part of the book is a letter to General Sir William Howe. The letter criticizes Howe's military strategy, arguing that he has squandered opportunities to defeat the Americans and bring the war to an end. The author details a series of battles in which Howe failed to pursue and destroy the American army, including Bunker Hill, Long Island, and German Town. The author argues that Howe's strategy is based on timidity and a desire to avoid casualties. He accuses Howe of being more concerned with maintaining his own reputation than with winning the war. Howe should have chosen to begin the war by securing towns and surrounding areas so as to starve out enemy forces. The consequence of his mercy, the author claims, was teaching the American rebels how to wage war. The second part of the book is an address to the American army, urging them to continue fighting for their independence. The author argues that the war is a just one, and that the Americans have a duty to fight for their freedom. He also argues that the American army is superior to the British army, and that they can win the war if they stay united and fight with determination, despite their lack of equipment. The third part of the book is a miscellaneous collection of essays and letters on various topics related to the war. These include discussions of the causes of the war, the role of France in the war, and the prospects for peace.
