Condition: Very Good. 7.5 x 5", paneled calf, 232pp, 365pp; 368pp, covers a bit rubbed, extremities bumped and lightly chipped, first book (parts one and two) with original gilt-lettered red spine label, second book (part 3) with recent gilt-lettered spine label, outer hinges starting, pp nice and bright, ink number "25" on each front fly, bookplates of a Honora Elizabeth Carroll in each volume, second volume also has a bookplate for an Erasmus Head ("Prebendary of Carlisle"), text nice and clean and bright.

Three volumes bound in two, 8vo, pp. [iv], 232; [vi], 120, 123-365; [viii], 368; the first two parts bound together, and the third separately; without the initial blank to volume II; in contemporary calf (not uniform), spine to first volume a bit chipped, second volume with upper cover detached. First edition of part III, the section edited by Swift, with the fourth and third editions of parts I and II: the preface, 'The Publisher to the Reader', in part III is from Swift's hand. Temple's essay 'Upon Ancient and Modern Learning', in part II, was the spark that lit the whole ancients vs moderns controversy. Teerink-Scouten 473.
