Mencken, then at the top of his unmatchable form (he had spoken at a meeting of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia only a little while before), suffered a stroke.

Very light glue residue remains on front end paper in one spot where gazette clipping of Mencken had been glued, still loosely inserted. Book in FINE condition overall. Dust jacket very good, near fine despite lightly bumped base and head of spin, spider lines. Jacket NEAR FINE. Great copy overall with variant dust jacket.

Blue cloth, pushed and the head and foot of the spine and corners, gilt lettering on the spine. Square and firmly bound with a blue top stain, clean internally.

Published by Knopf in blue cloth covered boards with gold spine titles and an impressed dual rearing stags and tree seal on the front board. Includes a black jacket printed with green, orange and white nonconcentric circles on the lower half of the front. The book is in Very Good condition with a Poor dust jacket included only for completeness. The covers are in great shape with light surface and edge wear. Light staining to the bottom edge of the text block. The binding is tight. There is a bookplate fixed to the front paste-down. The interior pages are unmarked. Jacket shows heavy edge wear, large chips and tears, and is missing at the lower third of the jacket's spine and the head of the spine. There is a faint circular stain on the rear of the jacket which is also slightly visible on the rear cover. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment for protection from the elements. He was a noted critic of American culture and political institutions and wrote extensively for the Baltimore Sun, the Evening Sun, and the Baltimore American, as well as for the Smart Set and the New York Evening Mail. Near Fine with a small bump at the spine base in a Very Good dust jacket that has some edge wear.

Some minor wear to spine ends with a miniscule nick to the crown. Top-stain faded. Attractive clipped dust jacket has some rubbing to spine ends with some tiny creases. Small shallow crease on front panel. A few spots of soiling. Still bright and complete with no chipping or tears. A very pretty collectable copy of an uncommon title and at a great price.

Two volumes -- Schrader A62-A and A62-B; each with different Herbert Bayer dust jacket design. Schrader's "A" jacket has concentric-circles design and "B" has grid of squares. Both are near fine in very good dust jackets showing moderated rubbing and edge wear; dust jacket design "A" is price clipped.
