The models and simulationtools presented provide the methodical prerequisitesfor the second part in which a novel concept of atraffic-adaptive control strategy for Adaptive CruiseControl (ACC) systems is presented. The impact ofsuch systems on the traffic dynamics can solely beinvestigated and assessed by traffic simulations. Inorder to ensure that ACC systems are implemented inways that improve rather than degrade trafficconditions, the thesis proposes an extension of ACCsystems towards traffic-adaptive cruise control bymeans of implementing an actively jam-avoidingdriving strategy. The presented concept is aiming atmoving forward adaptive and cooperative technologiesfor vehicle-based intelligent transportation systems(ITS).
