Condition: Very Good. First British Edition, published two years after the first American. Pale blue textured cloth, gilt lettering to upper board and spine, well faded on the spine, with the rather ethereal dust-jacket by J. Baynes of a partially naked woman whose bottom half appears to comprise fish scales, posing with a hand-mirror. All very bizarre, but striking nonetheless. Margins of text pages slightly tanned; without old inscriptions etc. A VG copy in the VG+ jacket. Psychological mystery involving a woman married to a psychologist who is a kleptomaniac and a murderer, in fact as the blurb on the jacket suggests, something of a female Jekyll and Hyde, who "is in the habit of communing with her subconscious, and the resulting dialogues introduce an original and fascinating method into her madness". In 1949 the novel was filmed as Whirlpool directed by Otto Preminger. Book.
