Produced by Vuillemin, in 1870, these finely crafted steel engravings capture the land and character of the area, as only the French could. While the quality of cartography is exemplar for the time, showing us all the detail of towns, villages as well as rivers and streams, one is immediately struck by how decorative these maps are. With vignettes of towns and castles, images of local celebrities and heroes, as well as coats of arms, these images have an aesthetic presentation that is tasteful and historic. The regions depicted here are by Department which were developed by Napoleon, and can be a benefit, as they afford us much smaller focus on a region than Province maps might offer.
