Totten was one of the most prolific and renowned architecture in America's Gilded Age. He continuously experiments in his work, building mansions and buildings that are now used as embassies and chanceries. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and one-hundred and four plates, eight of which are colour. With a bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Marshall Dill, 501 Marina Blvd, San Francisco, California'. This is possibly the Stanford University history professor, Marshall Dill. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'To Hebert A. Schmidt, from Aunt . May 5 1929'.
