Laura Lady Lovat, who was a close friend of Maurice Baring during the latter part of his life, has written an appreciation of his character and a description of his gaiety and courage during the long illness leading up to his death at her home in Scotland. Writing with great charm and sincerity she manages to convey to the reader the simple and lovable humanity of a man whose literary and linguistic genius made of him an embodiment of all that is finest in the culture of modern Christendom. The author has also collected from maurice Baring's friends some hitherto unpublished lettersin, including letters to Hilaire Belloc, Andre Maurois, 'Vernon Lee', Dame Ethel Smyth, Sir Ronald Storrs, some fine examples of his poetry and translations from the Russian, French and German Masters. In addition Monsignor Ronald Knox has written an essay on the influence of the classics upon Maurice Baring's mind, and Princess Marthe Bibesco has contributed her personal impressions of the man and his work. Blue cloth binding, gilt spine lettering, 116 pages, the book is in good condition with some fading/browning to the edges of the cloth and the spine. There is also some light spotting to the end papers and some light browning throughout. The dust jacket is good to very good with some light browning/spotting to the covers and some very minor chipping to the top of the spine and the corners. A very decent copy.
