First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First American edition. Tall octavo. x, 639pp. Binding very slightly cocked with a sunned spine and modest wear at the corners and spine ends, a thin strip of residue running around the bottom edge of the binding and approximately 2" strips on the bottom edges of both sets of endleaves and the top edge of the rear pastedown, very good. Inscribed by co-author Charles Merrick Gay to American artist (and student of Howard Pyle) Thornton Oakley on the front fly: "To the first alumnus of the School of Architecture, U. of P. Thornton Oakley. Charles M. Gay. September 25, 1932." Gay was at the the time of writing a professor of architecture at Penn, and Oakley received his Master's in Architecture from Penn in 1902, so there is a definite possibility that Oakley was Gay's former student. A nice association.
