The spine is brown leather, with five raised and ruled bands, gilt titling and decorations. Clean text; viii, 351 pages, top-edge gilt. Contemporary (1896) gift inscription on the second free endpaper. Rubbed around the margins, and with a chip to the foot of the spine; nonetheless, an attractive volume that presents very well. Bindings slightly soiled, corners bruised, free endpapers slightly browned, else a good set. Gathorne-Hardy turned nineteen on the last day of the month of his inscription. The previous year, with his fellow Christ Church Oxford undergraduates, Anthony Eden and David Cecil, he had founded the Uffizi Society, 'to discuss painters and Painting, past and present.' John Rothenstein later recalled it as a club 'so exclusive that it withered away because eventually nobody was considered worthy of election'. Edition limited to 1000 numbered copies.
