Between 1968 and 1971 he serves as a navigator in the Navy's EA-3 and EC-121 aircraft and was responsible for in-flight training and evaluation of junior pilots and navigators. Afterwards he taught navigation at the U.S. Naval Academy. He authored the chapters on the rules of the road for the 16th Edition of Knight's Modern Seamanship.
