Non ha importanza se il racconto parla delle mirabolanti avventure di Sennone, di semplici ricordi giovanili del nonno, oppure di una storia a sfondo religioso: l'incipit di tutte le fiabe ponzesi è sempre lo stesso, immutabile nel tempo. Combining older and newer discoveries in northern Australia Double-page engraved map, with contemporary hand-colour in outline. Focused on the Malay Peninsula, the map delineates the individual sultanates, and shows "Sincapura" as an island. Irian Jaya, as "Terra di Papous", appears as an island separate from New Guinea, "following an error which began in the 1590s which confused Irian Jaya and Seram, and continued in the seventeenth century owning to the uncertainty as to whether or not Irian Jaya was connected to the mainland of New Guinea (and whether New Guinea, in turn, was connected to Australia)" (Suarez). A large swathe of northern Western Australia appears along the bottom edge of the map. While incorporating the discoveries of Willem Janszoon, Jan Carstensz., Abel Tasman, and the shipwreck at "Trials I", it curiously retains the nomenclature of Marco Polo (perhaps honouring a fellow Italian?) with "Beach Prov", "Regno di Maleteur", and "Regno di Lucach" appearing in the most western region. This map, of Southeast Asia and northern Australia, was engraved by Franciscus Donia-Messis, originally drawn by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola, and also used as a model by Coronelli for his map of the same area. It was published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in his atlas 'Mercurio Geografico overo Guida geografica in tutte le parti del mondo conforme le tavole di Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola' (1688). The mapmakers Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643-1695) was an Italian cartographer and engraver. He joined the retinue of Count Rinieri Marescotti, and whilst travelling with the Count, met the publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, who became his partner. He eventually became court geographer to Reggio Francesco II d'Este, Duke of Modena. Founded in 1633, the de Rossi printing press was the most important and prolific in Rome during the seventeenth century. Just before the death of its founder, Giuseppe de Rossi (1570-1639), it was inherited by his son Giovanni Giacomo (1627-1691), under whom it produced some of its finest work. These included the etchings of several influential artists, such as Pietro Testa, Giovan Francesco Grimaldi and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, as well as a wealth of cartographic material. From the mid 1680s, Giovanni Giacomo published his first atlas, the 'Mercurio Geografico', in partnership with his adopted son Domenico de Rossi, who would ultimately become best-known as a sculptor. The first edition consisted of 30 maps dated from between 1669 and 1715, generally derived from the work of Cantelli da Vignola, the important seventeenth century cartographer whose fine style of bold engraving would have great influence on Vincenzo Coronelli. Piacevole e non comune carta tratta dall'opera Il Mercurio Geografico, degli editori romani De Rossi e per la cura di Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola, geografo del Duca d'Este. L'atlante risulta edito dal 1690 circa con diverse edizioni successive. La carta si estende da Sumatra alla Nuova Guinea e Australia settentrionale. La carta raffigura inoltre l'isola di Singapore e riporta interessanti particolari relativi alle Isole delle Spezie, al Borneo e alle Filippine. Nell'angolo in basso a sinistra Ë riportato il titolo all'interno dell'ampio cartiglio, decorato da sirene, tritoni e putti che giocano. Giacomo Cantelli nacque a Vignola, come ribadisce con la sua firma, e divenne il primo cartografo ufficiale della Corte di Modena, nel 1685, quando il Duca Francesco II lo nominÚ cartografo e custode della biblioteca. In lower left corner a large title cartouche, decorated with mermaids, mermen and playful putti. Giacomo Cantelli was born in Vignola, as he remarked with his signature, and was the first official cartographer of the Court of Modena, in 1685, when the Duke Francis II appointed him geographer. Depicting Malaya (Penisola di Malacca), Sumatra, Java, Celebes, Nova Guinea, and Nuova Olanda (Australia).(17½ x 23 in.) Black and White printed on very clean rag paper. Includes all of Tasmans north Australia discoveries but retains some of the earliest hypothetical provinces associated with the north west Beach, Maletur , etc. Clear passage between Cape York and New Guinea with a noted Abrolhos. First edition of this rare, large scale c.18th hand coloured engraved map of the East Indies, with a prominently featuring northern Australia by Giacomo de Cantelli da Vignola (1643-1695), although dated 1683 within the title the map was published in 1685 by Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi (1627-1691). Superbly embellished by a rococo title cartouche surrounded by putti and three merman support the shell-like structure which adorns the lower left corner. The title explains that the map shows recent discoveries including 'Isole de Ladri' (Island of Thieves) in the south seas. Australia is named 'Nuova Olanda' and the northwest has the names Beach, Maleteur and Lucach which were derived from the scribed accounts of Marco Polo's travels. As well as 'Paese di Concordia', meaning 'Country of Concordia', which refers to the discoveries made in 1616 by Hartog in the Eendracht. Other Dutch discoveries include those of Cartensz 1623 on Cape York and Abel Tasman 1644 on his second voyage. The Trial Islands, where the English ship the Trial was wrecked in 1621 are shown incorrectly placed off the northwest coast and New Guinea is shown separated from Papua (Iran Jaya) by a strait, an error that had existed since the 1590s. Very good. Slight foxing. Size 17.5 x 22.75 Inches. A rare, highly decorative 1683 map of Southeast Asia and the East Indies by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola and Giacomo de Rossi. A Closer Look The map depicts the Malay Peninsula, Cochinchina, and the kingdom of Siam. Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and the Spice Islands are based primarily on the Dutch maps of the period, as is also the case with the Philippines. Singapore Island is named. The island 'Terra di Papous' is separated from 'Nuova Guinea,' an error preserved from Nicolosi's large map of Asia, whose geography this map otherwise improves upon. The southern portion of the map is dominated by Nuova Olanda , that is to say, 'New Holland' aka Australia. Much of the detail here appears to be drawn from Thevenot's map based on Tazman, but there are some place names retained from Marco Polo, such as the hypothetical provinces of Lucach and Maletur. There is a lush cartouche in the lower left surrounded by putti and Mer-men, bearing a wealth of sea-shells and cornucopia filled with spice-pods. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola, engraved by Francisus Donia Messis, and published by Giacomo de Rossi in his c. 1683 Mercurio Geografico . We identify only three institutional collections to hold separate examples of this map: Princeton, the National Library Board of Singapore, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
