The region is relatively arid, allowing for a diurnal temperature variation that allows for the grapes to cool overnight, retaining their acidity while developing rich fruity flavors. Rainfall is scant, which is why this map shows the vast majority of areas under viticulture (shaded in green) hugging the shores of the valley's river systems, which were used for irrigation since the first farmers and herders settled the area in the 18th century. These rivers also deposit soil rich with minerals, which also contribute to the distinctive wine flavors. Text on the verso of the map provides additional information on the climate, geology, and viticulture of the region.
