Both Folio-Size Sketch Books titled 'The "Wood" Sketch Book', both issued by 'St. John's Wood Art School': 29, Elm Tree Road, London, NW 8. [Founded 1878]. Each Sketch-Book has 50 pages and most pages have manuscript sketches with a few loose sketches tipped in. The very accomplished drawings all appear to be in pencil and show landscapes, trees, horses, portraits, male and female figures, skulls. They all appear to be in the same hand. Also, tipped in is a b/w photo, 6" x 4" mounted on a card. It is signed in pencil by Roberts of Paris. Stamped on the back is "Roberts" 11, Rue du Havre. In pencil, it states "Elizabeth aged 11, May 19

Add to basketCondition: Sehr gut. Two Volumes. Folio. Volume I: 118 pages (59 perforated sheets), with 87 studies, often with sketching on both sides of the sheets / Volume II: 100 pages (50 perforated sheets), with 46 studies inside the sketch-book plus two portrait-sketches loosely inserted, plus the photograph of one "Elizabeth", dated May 1922 and signed by photographer "Roberts" 11, Rue du Havre, Paris. Publisher's illustrated Hardcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Provenance: These two stunning Sketch-Books originate from the Property of TV Producer John Williams, Kerry [produced The Late Late Show for a number of years in Dublin]. According to the auction-house Whyte's in Dublin: "Colum was the son of Mordaunt Gore-Booth and was at one time a trustee of the family estate at Lissadell, Co. Sligo" (Source: Whyte's Website). This is especially of interest since it could explain the labelling of the Sketch-Books as No.43 of an Estate Sale at Lissadell and the bookplate "Lady Gore-Booth" in that case would be misleading. We therefore assume the sketch-books being definitely those of the only proven attendee at St.John's Wood Art School: "Colum Robert Gore-Booth". A wonderful find .…

Boards fragile and spine loosened. In protective Collector's Mylar to give the slightly broken binding stability. A very rare publication with the beautiful, signed manuscript-letters by George Oliver, signed in the years 1857 and 1858. The letters are also of interest regarding the history of John Hoker [John Hooker / John Vowell] because George Oliver mentions Hoker's entry "into the New Office of Chamberlain of Exeter at Michaelmas 1555 - having the fee of £4 by the yere & his Lyveries - MS. Hist. p.351". George Oliver (17811861) was an English Roman Catholic priest and a historian of Exeter, Devon, England, and its environs. Oliver born at Newington, Surrey, on 9 February 1781, and was educated, first at Sedgley Park School, Staffordshire, and afterwards at Stonyhurst College. During the eleven years that he spent at Stonyhurst, Charles Plowden was his spiritual director, and took an interest in his literary studies. He was promoted to holy orders at Durham by bishop William Gibson, in May 1806. In October 1807, he was sent to the mission of the Society of Jesus at St. Nicholas, Exeter, as successor to Thomas Lewis. This mission he served for forty-four years, retiring from active duty on 6 October 1851. He continued, however, to reside in the priory, and occupied the same room till the day of his death. Oliver was one of the last Catholic priests, pupils of the English Jesuits, who did not enter the Society, but remained in the service of the English province, and subject to its superiors. On 30 March 1843 he was elected an honorary member of the Historical Society of Boston, US, and on 15 September 1844 he was created D.D. by Pope Gregory XVI. On the erection of the canonical chapters in 1852, after the restoration of the hierarchy by Pope Pius IX, Oliver was appointed provost of the chapter of Plymouth, a dignity he resigned in 1857. He died at St. Nicholas mission, Exeter, on 23 March 1861, and was buried on 2 April near the high altar in his chapel. Oliver's works relate mainly to the county of Devon. They include: 'Historic Collections relating to the Monasteries in Devon,' Exeter, 1820. 'The History of Exeter,' Exeter, 1821, 8vo; 2nd edit. Exeter, 1861. An index to the second edition, privately printed in 1884, was compiled by J. S. Attwood. A translation of Father John Gerard's Latin 'Autobiography' from the manuscript at Stonyhurst College; printed in fourteen numbers of the Catholic Spectator, 18236. 'Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Devon, being Observations on many Churches in Devonshire, originally published in the "Exeter and Plymouth Gazette," with a Letter on the Preservation and Restoration of our Churches,' Exeter, 1828,; written with the Rev. John Pike Jones of North Bovey, who contributed the introduction and the descriptions of twelve churches. 'Ecclesiastical Antiquities in Devon, being Observations on several Churches in Devonshire, with some Memoranda for the History of Cornwall,' 3 vols., Exeter, 1839401842. A new work. 'Cliffordiana,' privately printed, Exeter [1828], containing a detailed account of the Clifford family, three funeral addresses, and a list of the pictures at Ugbrooke Park. The author made collections for an enlarged edition, and wrote a series of thirteen articles on th.…

Delarue (Calls herself "The Gleaner" with silhouette of her inside front board), the aunt of Joseph Ludlow Delarue (dedicated to him on first leaf in copperplate and calligraphic script) and dated 1836. The old album in embossed leather boards which are both detached and spine lost completely. There are a total of 52 finished watercolour drawings and pencil sketches and many other handwritten sonnets, poems, comments and prose written on a total of 107 leaves. Album complete front to back. A lot are initialled A. F. D. so presumably the original owner mentioned above, which would make these earlier 1820's-30's, than the date 1835/6. Despite the fact it is dis-bound, the boards are here but loose, the contents have an attractive layout and presentation is neat and thoughtful and many would/could remove to be shown as individual paintings. Small quarto. *NOTE: A little biography is to be found online, Joseph L. Delarue was in London aged 15, he became a teacher at the famous Lancing Grammar School in Sussex in the 1840's (So I assume his Aunt gave him this aged about 12-15).…

Add to basket10pp., 8vo. On five leaves torn from a notebook. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper. A creditable effort, showing the influence of Gray's 'Elegy' and Goldsmith's 'Deserted Village', describing the unnamed farm hand's funeral, and reflecting on the virtues and hardships of the poor. Begins: 'From yonder peaceful and secluded dell, | Snug in the bosom of th'encircling hills, | The perfumed Zephyr bears a passing knell, | And melancholy o'er the Soul distils. | It tells us hoary Time's unswerving flight | Has snapped the thread of Life's uncertain span; | And that grim Death with his relentless might, | Has swung his sickle through th'abode of man.' Care has been taken in the revision of the text, with emendations including several passages deleted and replaced. The poem ends abruptly on the tenth page, suggesting that it is not complete: 'Then comes the happy and eventful day | When scarce-used clothes once more are brought to view'. …
