Dust jacket in protective mylar cover. Good binding and cover. Gift inscription to Roland Scott Jr. from his parents on verso. Bookplate of Scott also on verso. "Roland B. Scott was a Washington pediatrician who founded Howard University's Center for Sickle Cell Disease and received international acclaim for researching the painful genetic blood disorder that predominantly affects blacks. Dr. Scott was chairman of pediatrics at Howard from 1949 to 1973 and also had a private pediatric practice in the city. By the 1950s, with a growing reputation for his sickle cell research, he was among the first black doctors granted privileges at such facilities as Children's and Providence hospitals, according to press reports at the time. The Washington Post noted then that several hospitals had an 'unwritten ban against Negro physicians.' Dr. Scott started the Center for Sickle Cell Disease in 1972 with a grant from the National Institutes of Health and remained director until his retirement in 1990." - Washington Post Obit.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: NEAR FINE set. Mandalay ed. FINE but: All with minor edgewear, AND Jungle book has 2 flaws; tp reinforced at gutter line & top 1/20" of spine worn away. Half black morroco with gilt lettered red leather author & title labels. Five gilt dotted raised ribs. Blank panels with gilt decorative floral devices. Marbled boards. TEG. A gorgeous set. Most of the outer hinges have light wear normally associated with occasional use but the spine ends (not the jungle books vol) are AS NEW. Zero evidence of finger pulling or any spine heel wear. With the exception of Barrack Room Ballads NONE OF THESE HAVE EVER been read. Many leaves are attached at their top edge. The attachments seem not to be from unopened leaves but because the gilt on the text block top edges sticks together. Open any of these books and they are all the same. Still and all, it is odd that the outer hinge scuffing would seem to indicate lots of opening and closing. Each vol has two books listed on the tps but only Jungle Book and From Sea to Sea vols print the 2nd title on their spine's title labels. All these second titles are separately paginated. A complete listing of all 26 titles available on request. FINE interiors (again, except for Jungle Book), no aging, glue browned pastedowns, foxing, marginalia, etc. LASTLY, all stay closed when stood on their spines.
