Condition: Fair. 1946. First Edition. 158 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth with black lettering to spine and front. Please note: author's name is spelt correctly on front board, spine and title page, unlike some other 1st editions, so this may be a different state. Pages are moderately tanned and foxed throughout. Binding has remained firm. Creased front endpaper. Slight stain to rear endpaper and pastedown. Pastedowns slightly bubbled. Small black spot to third leaf. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed. Spine ends are slightly crushed. Sunning to spine and edges. Boards are notably bowed. Book has a forward lean. Possible slight faint staining also.…

Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 158 pp. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding firm. Very rare and collectible first edition of the author's debut novel. It was produced in rather small numbers due to it's commercial failure, but later gained desirability following the fame found by the author under his later adopted pseudonym of Hank Janson. Due to a printing error the author's name is written as Frances on both dust jacket and title page, but Francis on front board. The dust jacket has several minor tears, with slight marking, and fading to spine, with minor loss to top and base of spine. Slight marking to front pastedown and edges. Quantity Available: 1. The semi-autobiographical first book by Frances, who would go on to great success with hardboiled US-style thrillers written under the pseudonym Hank Janson. These books were phenomenally successful in their time, opening the way for a variety of copycat British authors writing in a similar vein, but they did also court controversy when a murder supposedly inspired by one of the Hank Janson titles led to the publishers being taken to court and successfully prosecuted for obscenity (the author managed to avoid a similar fate on it seems a technicality). The publisher Pendulum was set up by Frances, with a doctor friend of his.
