"First Slice: Being the Adventures of Bunyip Bluegum and his friends Bill Barnacle and Sam Sawnoff" So begins this delightful large children's book; set, of course, in Australia. The book is in very good internally, bindings are tight and secure, and there are no markings or damage anywhere in the book. The edge of the spine is worn and a little frayed. First edition, first printing (as distinguished by the printed "A&R" light-green endpapers; the second issue has plain white endpapers). Quarto (28 x 22cm). Publisher's original quarter purple-brown cloth over papered boards with titles and central vignette in purple-brown to the upper board and titles in gilt to the spine, in the original dustwrapper with colour illustrated onlay to the front panel. Additional pictorial colour title page. Illustrated throughout with black and white drawings by Norman Lindsay, numerous pages with additional near-contemporary hand-colouring - not necessarily displeasing and almost certainly executed by an adult rather than by a child. pp. 171, [1]. A good copy, the binding with cracking to the hinges in several places, a small scrape to the top corner of the lower board, and with a little rubbing and toning to the extremities. The somewhat shaken contents with two small areas of abrasion to the front and rear pastedowns, a small corner crease to the front free endpaper, half-title, and additional title page, a heavier corner crease to the final text leaf, a small chip to the foot of the rear endpaper, and occasional light finger-marking to the text are otherwise in good order. The dustwrapper with the rear flap apparently trimmed by 3cm vertically with the removed section subsequently used to make paper repairs to the reverse of the head and foot of the spine and joints (the repair overlapping to the front at the spine ends), a couple of minor holes to the centre of the upper joint, and some marking to the illustrated onlay is otherwise in good order. The first edition of this much-loved classic of Australian children's literature by the artist Norman Lindsay (1879-1969), which, for more than a century, has not been out of print. Famously, the work's origins lay in an argument between Lindsay and his friend Bertram Stevens regarding what children preferred to read, with Stevens arguing that they favoured fairies and Lindsay contending that they were most preoccupied by food. Lindsay proved his point with the present work, replete with 102 illustrations, charting the adventures of a sailor, a penguin, and a koala in the Australian bush, and their encounters with a magical, self-regenerating pudding, whose only desire is to be eaten.
