One of the original collections of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (which was founded in 1934 and opened by HM George VI in 1937) was that of Arthur George Holdsworth Macpherson, Great-great-uncle of E&W chairman Angus Macpherson. Arthur George Holdsworth Macpherson (1873-1942), the son of a Calcutta high-court judge, had lifelong passions both for the sea and for collecting maritime prints, and was a sort of Francis Chichester / Alec Rose figure who came to prominence in the 1930s as he sailed the world in his 25 foot cutter Driac II. John Scott Hughes wrote up his tale in the book Macpherson's Voyages. Macpherson's collection of over 11,000 items was acquired for the Royal Museums, Greenwich by Sir James Caird, the 1st Baronet of Glenfarquhar, in 1928. This came in very handy for Macpherson was heading for bankruptcy at the time on account of the collection. In gratitude to Sir James, Macpherson named his cutter Driac which is Caird spelled backwards. Macpherson was eternally in his debt. The Macpherson Collection was the NMM's founding collection being Caird s first purchase for it after a national appeal failed to raise the sum needed. Now displayed in the National Martime Mueum and Queens House Galleries, the Macpherson collection is cared for by the Society for Nautical Research, which is the trustee of the Macpherson Collection Endowment Fund. Michael Strang Robinson (1910 -1999) was Keeper of Pictures at the National Maritime Museum, London, England. He was an expert on the paintings of Willem van de Velde, the elder and Willem van de Velde, the younger. Robinson was born in Hamble, Hampshire, England on 20 April 1910. His father, Gregory Robinson, was a painter of seascapes and a founder of the Society for Nautical Research, of which Michael Robinson later became honorary vice-president. As a child, he was a frequent sailor, and as a student at London University, he took a job cataloguing prints for the Royal Naval College in Greenwich. He was hired by the National Maritime Museum in 1934. Robinson joined the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1930, and during World War II he served in the Special Boat Section of the British Royal Navy. Returning to the National Maritime Museum after the war, Robinson became head of department in 1947. In the campaign for a maritime museum, patrons such as Sir James Caird and SNR support enabled Geoffrey Callender to purchase the large Macpherson collection of naval and nautical prints in 1928 - this was then added to the Greenwich Naval College's collection of ship-models and marine art to form the nucleus of the new museum's collection. A building to house the collection was also soon found when the Queen's House at Greenwich was vacated by the Royal Hospital School, and so in 1934 the government passed the National Maritime Museum Act, making Callender the Museum's first director. The Queen's House was restored, galleries prepared within it, and further objects collected and arranged, all with Callender's energetic participation, and opening came only 3 years after the Act, in 1937. This book is lavishly illustrated throughout with many images published here for the first time. Ref CC 1 Size: 264pp.
