Its curator K. G. Pontus Hultén described it as a "collection of comments on technology by artists of the Western world," particularly in the modern age when "the mechanical machine - which can most easily be defined as an imitation of our muscles - is losing its dominating position among the tools of mankind; while electronic and chemical devices - which imitate the processes of the brain and the nervous system - are becoming increasingly important." Add to basketHardcover. Condition: very good. First edition. Catalog that accompanied a seminal exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1968. René d'Harnoncourt, then director of the MoMA had the idea for an exhibition of kinetic art but this idea was soon extended to new dimensions to an overview of the history of machines within an artistic context. Each of them is displayed on a single page with extensive black and white imagery. Starting of with earliest depictions of machines by Dürer, da Vinci and contemporaries, all the way through with Robert Beer's kinetic plastic sheet continiously changing its shape by different, indiscernible mechanisms. and Wen-Ying Tsai's "cybernetic" sculpture projecting onto ocillating rods. Hardcover with silkscreened tin covers, with raised and painted illustration on front. Covers are bound by three rivets and nine small hinges for front and rear covers. Spine has started to tarnish; there is mild rubbing to covers. Better than usual overall condition. 6" - 8½". book.
