Full-Leather Style Binding. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Bound in full leather with the bookseller ticket of William Macgill, Edinburgh stationer, anchoring the purchase to the Maxwell family's Edinburgh residency in the late 1850s. The book contains 6 used leaves of fine hand-illuminated miniatures and borders (3 finished, 3 unfinished). Remaining leaves blank. The Artwork & Leaves: Leaf 1: Monreith Armorial (Finished, 1858) Armorial illumination belonging to a 13-year-old Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell. Cartouche bears his full title, family heraldic shield (saltire, double-headed eagle, hedgehog), date MDCCLVIII (1858), and motto "REVIRESCO". Vine border with thistles in ink, watercolour, and gold shell. Leaf 2: St. John the Evangelist (Finished) Miniature depicting St. John writing his Gospel with his symbolic eagle, set against a Patmos coastal landscape with castles and ships. Gothic script excerpt from 1 John 4:9. Gilded medieval-style border with blue/gold acanthus leaves, wild strawberries, and marginalia of a dragon emerging from a snail shell. Leaf 3: Medieval Border & Dragon (Unfinished) Decorative medieval-style bar border with gold leaf gilding, ivy, and two exotic birds, terminating in a painted fire-breathing dragon. Preserves delicate graphite underdrawings showing Maxwell's layout mapping process. Leaf 4: Psalm 119 & Natural History Studies (Finished) Devotional miniature on Psalm 119:9-16 in Gothic script with red/blue line-fillers and a gold filigree "W" initial. Border features solid gold ground with pomegranate vines captioned "(mala granata)", populated with a blue butterfly, caterpillar, dragonfly, beetle, and snail. Leaf 5: The Lorsch Gospels Facsimile (Finished) Full-page illumination copying the 9th-century Carolingian "Incipit" page to the Gospel of John from the Codex Aureus of Lorsch, via H.N. Humphreys' 1849 manual. Monumental John 1:1 text in gold/uncial characters on purple background, framed by Romanesque columns and thick shell gold. Leaf 6: The Adoration of the Magi (Unfinished) Nativity miniature showing the Adoration of the Magi under the Star of Bethlehem. Text block beneath features an illuminated initial "B" in blue and gold, with the remainder pencilled in graphite reading "Behold the Lamb of God". Lower third preserves raw graphite layouts of acanthus leaves, pansies, and strawberries. the artwork represents the pinnacle of mid-Victorian aristocratic art education during the Gothic Revival craze, using fine shell gold, inks, and gouache. The precise insects and pomegranates foreshadow Maxwell's later renown as a celebrated Scottish naturalist, gardener, and botanical painter. The inclusion of finished pages alongside unfinished pieces makes this a rare pedagogical artifact demonstrating Victorian illumination techniques. CONDITION: Some cracking to the upper external joint of the binding, but the cover remains structurally well attached. Text block clean and tight. MAXWELL OF MONREITH, Sir Herbert Eustace (1845-1937) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Folio. Quarter vellum with gilt lettering and red cloth, slipcase. (Ca. 400pp). Extensive illustrations (some color). Fine/very good. A lovely and fresh copy of this outstanding facsimile, with a fine copy of the accompanying 24pp folio illustrated introductory pamphlet by Braunfels. The Codex Aureas of Lorsch or "Lorsch Gospels," named after the German monastery where it was likely created, is an illuminated Gospel volume penned in Latin in two-column format between 778 and 820. Part of the original resides at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rome, the other part at the Biblioteca Documentara Batthyaneum in Alba Julia, Rumania, with a couple of the ivory panels at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London -- but all appear together here for the first time as a single unified text in this large and magnificent production. Colophon at rear notes limitation to 1,000 numbered copies (here unnumbered).

One of 1,000 copies. Includes six color engravings from photographs by Robert Braunmller, and many color-printed plates, though most of the production consists of high-quality monochrome plates. After centuries of separation, the four parts which comprise the Lorsch Gospels were united in the Coronation Hall of the Holy Roman Empire in Aachen, Germany on the occasion of the 1965 exhibition of the Council of Europe "Charlemagne: His Achievements and Influence." The respective owners cooperated to photograph the entire manuscript and the ivory covers during the exhibition. Thus a foundation was laid for the reconstruction of the manuscript in this fine facsimile edition, which must serve in the place of a unified whole. Two volumes, folio, including a complete facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels from the Biblioteca Documentara Batthyaneum in Alba Julia, Rumania and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rome. Bound in quarter vellum over red cloth boards, title in gilt on spine, and a twenty-four page introductory text in gray wrappers. Both in fine condition in publisher's cloth slipcase.
