The longcase clock is arguably the most interesting and at the same time useful antique available to the collector and this is a detailed, illustrated book written on the subject. Now available again but in a completely revised edition with new illustrations and a rewritten text to take account of recent findings, this reference explains how the longcase clock is almost unique in blending fine examples of cabinet work and clock mechanism in one piece. The photographs on specific aspects of the mechanisms and case designs, together with an unpadded text, should make the book readily understandable. Some of the more difficult mechanisms are further clarified by line drawings. The range of cabinet work and the evolution of clockwork over the 150 years covered by this book is immense, and it comprehensively illustrates the choices available while drawing attention to the many pitfalls collectors should avoid. In this way the book teaches the reader how to identify quality as well as understand the importance of condition. As well as an attractive piece, the longcase clock is highly practical for most examples can be persuaded to keep time accurately enough for domestic needs. Here this book traces in detail the movement towards improved accuracy and discusses the ways in which this was achieved, together with the various methods attempted.
