Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. In German only. Small closed tear in margin of last leaf. 64 pages. 19 x 12 cm. (7¾ x 5 inches). On the page listing the characters, the previous owner, who was Zeev Priell (his name does not appear here) wrote lightly in pencil the names of singers he must have heard at a performance. He lists the great Heldenbariton Schipper who sang Friedrich von Telramund. Schipper's last stage performance was in 1938, but Priel heard his sing long before. Priell left Germany for Israel in 1933saw his sing this libretto was very likely published before 1939. the first owner, Zeev Priel (Zeev Priell (Wolfgang Friedlaender), the conductor, who was born March 20, 1907 in Berlin and died in Israel 16 June 1991. His father, Moshe Friendlander had a philosophy doctorate and studied Semitic languages. He died as a soldier fighting for the German fatherland in World War 1. In his youth, Zeev was a member of the Bar Kochba and the Blau Weiss youth movements, studied piano, music theory and conducting at the Berlin Music Academy and upon completion of his studies traveled to Rome, Italy in 1931 to complete his conducting studies under Bernardino Molinari. As a young conductor he worked at the Hamburg Municipal Theater and even conducted in berlin and Warsaw. In March 1933 he was fired from his position because he was Jewish. He was heckled by Christians and Nazis with "Go back to Palestine." And approximately one month later he did just that. He immigrated to Eretz Israel, the land of is forefather, leaving the country for which his father died. He settled in Tel Aviv. and already on May 16, 1933 he organized the first symphony orchestra concert which he conducted in Israel. Priell was one of the founders of the Eretz Israel Philharmonic , established October 1933 whose head was Meir Dizengoff. He conducted its first concert December 30, 1933. With this orchestra he conducted a series of concerts in which the violinst Bronislav Huberman played. And his success was one of the factors that convinced Huberman to help develop music in Israel and teo create what later became the Israel Philharmonic. Priell also conducted at what because The Israeli Opera before and after independence. Yours truly acquired this libretto in Israel half a century ago and it's time to pass it on to some else.
