Seitenansichten: André Jouineau - Übersetzer: Aus dem Franz. von Brigitte Kazenwadel-Drews - - LUFTFAHRT - - mit zahlreichen farbigen Abbildungen - Die verschiedenen Baureihen des 1926 in Burbank/Kalifornien gegründeten Lockheed-Flugzeugkonzerns trugen Namen, die von Sternen entlehnt waren. Bereits… das erste Flugzeug, ein 1927 serienmäßig gebauter Hochdecker, hatte den Namen Vega. Konsequenterweise bestand das Firmensignet damals schon aus jenem Stern, den alle Lockheed-Maschinen tragen sollten, und Weltruhm erlangte die Baureihe Constellation. Dieses Verkehrsflugzeug ging auf die Anregung des exaltierten Multimillionärs und Flugzeugpioniers Howard Hughes zurück. Die Constellation war weltweit das erste Langstrecken-Verkehrsflugzeug mit Druckkabine und gilt somit als Mitbegründerin der modernen Flugreise. Kriegsbedingt kam die Constellation auch als Transporter bei der US Air Force zum Einsatz und bewährte sich nach Kriegsende als Stütze der Berliner Luftbrücke. Die Baureihe wurde mit der Super Constellation 1950 erfolgreich weiterentwickelt. Insgesamt wurde die Super-Connie" 285-mal als Passagierflugzeug und 325-mal als Militärversion gebaut. Ihren Abschluss fand Lockheeds erfolgreichste Flugzeugreihe 1956 mit dem Starliner, auf dessen Bau abermals der TWA-Eigentümer Howard Hughes gedrängt hatte. Mehrheitlich ging die Baureihe an die TWA, doch auch die Air France und die Lufthansa setzten den Starliner im Linienverkehr nach Amerika ein. Die TWA taufte sie bald in Super Star" um, bei der Lufthansa hieß sie Jetstream". Der Starliner avancierte zum ersten Verkehrsflugzeug, das den Atlantik von der amerikanischen Ostküste im Nonstop-Flug nach Europa überwinden konnte.
