He was born in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire, in 1919 and educated at High Pavement School, Stanley Road, Nottingham, and later at University College Nottingham. Middleton started writing while at university and in 1958 published his first novel "A Short Answer". Alongside his work as an author, he taught English at High Pavement Grammar School for many years. In 1974, his novel "Holiday" won the Booker Prize. In 2008, "Her Three Wise Men" was published, this being his 44th novel, and the last to be published during his lifetime.' (Wiki) ***'Stanley Middleton's reputation as the foremost chronicler of English Midlands provincial life is further burnished by his latest novel, "Live and Learn", which explores the expanding possibilities the world offers to a young couple Jonathan and Emma. ***Jonathan, a twenty-eight-year-old academic and a keen rugby player, and Emma, a solicitor daughter of a methodist parson, seem to have every opportunity of leading the decent life, as defined traditionally by many previous generations. There are the usual compromises and adjustments to be made in work and leisure, the usual satisfaction and fulfilments, the usual processes of living and learning. ***But life, even solid provincial life, can be more precarious and extreme than it at first appears. Sudden violence, even murder, can craze the most serene surface, as Jonathan and Emma discover. And in the process they come to a fuller understanding of how complex even the most straightforward life really is.' ***'Middleton is a born writer; unpretentious, discerning, intelligent, and virtually incapable of writing a duff sentence. He is the Chekhov of suburbia; I recommend him' - James Runcie. (Quote and review quote taken from the front flap and back panel of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the true first edition, in its original dustwrapper, in near fine condition, albeit with tanned paper stock. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
