Uncommonly clean and sharp with crisp, fresh pages and very tight hinges.

A couple of small nicks/chips in the original glassine jackets of two volumes, volume 4 clipped at the flap corner but not removing the price. This set in very near fine condition, clean throughout and the bindings tight and square, with only light nicking to the spine head of one jacket, all housed in black cloth cases, the first four in clamshell boxes, the final two in black cloth slipcases with gilt titles to the front and spine of each. Complete with all the lithographs.

Published over a period of 26 years, this six-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs is richly illustrated with 28 original lithographs (all called for) and list hundreds of Chagall's other lithographs reproduced in color. Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. The djs of four volumes (I, IV, V, VI) are protected with their original acetate overlays and Vol. IV is still in the publisher's thin cardboard slipcase. All the lithographic dust jackets are in near fine to fine condition with the exception of Volume III which has a small (1/4" x 1/2") chip at the head of the spine. "Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent printmaking process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45).

Foreword by Marc Chagall, notes and catalog by Fernand Mourlot and translated from the French by Maria Jolas. Striking first volume of what would eventually become a 6-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs. This catalogue is complete with its 12 original lithographs by the artist. This first volume of Chagall's collected lithographs was followed by five successive volumes in series. All volumes published simultaneously in English, French and German. Unfortunately lacking the lithographed dust jacket; all other lithographs are present. Text and images are unmarked; pages are bright, though the page edges are age toned. Previous owner's gift inscription in pen on the second page in. Binding is sturdy. Covers show some wear around the corners and the cloth is frayed at the base of the spine. The covers are a little tanned near the top edge. No dust jacket.

Book has all 11 internal lithographs and they are in excellent condition. The dustjacket is the 12th Lithograph. The book is in Very Good- condition with clean covers, square spine and tight binding. There is dampstain on the top of text near the spine that does not affect any pages and another small one on the top rear corner that affects only that corner. Toning along the top edge of covers. One word name on first endpage.The dustjacket is in Good only condition. It is clean and bright with chipping and short closed tears along the top edge. Dampstain to top rear corner which also has a shallow chip missing. Rest of jacket shows light wear but no tears. Mylar wrapped. A clean, tight copy with all the lithographs. Photos upon request.

Large quarto, five volumes, 221, 209, 181, 183 and 251 pages with well over a thousand illustrations (many in colour) plus all 24 original lithographs (21 in colour); in addition, the dustwrappers for the first four volumes are also original colour lithographs. Cloth; the first two volumes have minimal foxing to the top edges, endpapers and plain flaps of the dustwrappers; the third volume is a little foxed and marked on the edges, with renewed endpapers, and shows minor signs of use (there is a commercial gallery bookplate on the recto of an early blank leaf); the fourth volume has minimal foxing to the top edge and endpapers, and some small ink splashes to the bottom edge; the fifth volume has a little foxing to the endpapers; overall, an excellent set with the dustwrappers in excellent condition, with a few trifling blemishes (the first one is slightly rubbed, with the spine slightly torn at the head and a little sunned; the second one is slightly rubbed, and a little bumped at the foot of the front hinge; the third one is a little rubbed, with the ends of the spine lightly discoloured (by offsetting from two small pieces of tape, now removed, once present to reinforce the ends, and to close a short tear to the head); the original transparent dustwrapper protectors are still present on all but the third volume.
