Odd volume of this discursive series, treating solely of the elephant, both African and Indian, its natural history and uses & abuses by man, including hunting and 'entertainments'; complete in one volume. Small hardcover, half brown calf over marbled boards, brown leather labels, gilt titling, blind tooling. Shows a little wear, old paper stuck to top half-inch or so of rear cover; endsheets show some tanning from the leather; minor foxing within. Text clean; viii, 396 pages, 83 wood engravings as called for. Size: 4¼" by 6½".

PB. 12mo, orig. cloth, blind-stamped decorative borders to both boards, gt dec. to spine; rear board partly faded, otherwise in very nice condition. A little foxing to prelims. Contemporary ink ownership stamp to endpaper. Very good. Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. First edition. Vol. II only - the 'Elephant' volume. A further two volumes on Menageries were published in 1829 and 1840, but this volume is complete in itself. Freeman 2129.
