Attractive first edition of this tribute to the influential Illinois attorney and Democ…ratic politician (1863-1939) who served that state in Congress as representative (1897-99) and senator (1931-39), serving as the Senate's first Majority Whip. Choice presentation copy, as boldly recorded by its recipient in black ink on front flyleaf: "Presented to me by / Mrs James Hamilton Lewis -- / Adlai E. Stevenson / 4/15/40." The senator's widow, Rose Lawton Douglas (1871-1972), had "A.E.S." embossed in gilt at lower right corner of front board. Up-and-comer Stevenson (1900-65), later Illinois governor and two-time Democratic presidential candidate, was in 1940 a Chicago attorney who had just been appointed by FDR's Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox as principal attorney and special assistant, soon after joining the State Department to help create the United Nations. Tipped to blank leaf facing Stevenson's inscription is a Typed Note Signed from Lewis: 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 20 May 1918. Addressed to James Waldo Fawcett. Near fine. On "United States Senate" letterhead, Lewis tells "My dear Brother Fawcett," a journalist (1893-1968), "I thank you for your letter, and particularly am I pleased to read your article." Boldly signed in full.
