John Tenniel, Lewis Carroll, & others (illustrator). This 1982 edition is published by Avenel Books, distributed by Crown Publishers, Inc. h g f e d c b a printing line. 869pp. Clean & tight copy, unread & unmarked, in Very Good condition, pulpy paper pages uniformly yellowed in VG presentation, w/over 300 illustrations. "The only anthology containing all of Lewis Carroll's authorized illustrated works, including the facsimile of the original manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, in Carroll's handwriting and with his own drawings. [] It is extraordinary that, until today, no one has thought to collect all of the illustrated works of Lewis Carroll in one volume. Now, in honor of the 150th anniversary of his birth, editor Edward Guiliano has done so. For what could be more logical (to use one of Carroll's favorite words) than to gather this group of texts, each one rich with illustrations that had been chosen, approved, and in many cases suggested by Carroll? [] In his fascinating introduction, Edward Guiliano relates the many interesting twists and turns of the author's relationships with his various artists, the reasons for his choices, and evaluates how well they turned out. For the reader, however, it can only turn out well; for he can revel in the hundreds of illustrations with diverse subjects and moods--intriguing, whimsical, and comical--as well as pursue the texts chosen for their readability and reliability, with pictures all faithfully reproduced from editions published in Lewis Carroll's lifetime. [] The work of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson--that eccentric, brilliant, paradoxical, and proper Victorian who is universally known as Lewis Carroll--speaks to a broad audience, from layman to scholar, and this comprehensive anthology is geared to please such a large spectrum. It includes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, The Hunting of the Snark, Rhyme? and Reason?, A Tangled Tale, Alice's Adventures Under Ground, Sylvie and Bruno, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded, Three Sunsets and Other Poems. [] Unique and important also are the Biographical Chronology of Lewis Carroll's life that Dr. Guiliano has annotated in a lively and highly readable style and the Selected Bibliography of Books that he has prepared with care, judiciousness, and an eye to its usefulness to the broadest range of readers possible." [publisher jacket copy] Very Good hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in a bright-as-new intact NF jacket, all quite presentable.

A Miscellany; Index of First Lines of Verse; Chronological Table. ***'Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (27 Jan 1832 - 14 Jan 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, poet, mathematician, photographer and reluctant Anglican deacon. His most notable works are "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) and its sequel "Through the Looking-Glass" (1871), some of the most important examples of Victorian literature. He was noted for his facility with word play, logic, and fantasy. His poems "Jabberwocky" (1871) and "The Hunting of the Snark" (1876) are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. Some of Alice's nonsensical wonderland logic reflects his published work on mathematical logic. Carroll came from a family of high-church Anglicans, and pursued his clerical training at Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar, teacher and (necessarily for his academic fellowship at the time) Anglican deacon. Alice Liddell - a daughter of Henry Liddell, the Dean of Christ Church - is widely identified as the original inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll had always denied this. An avid puzzler, Carroll created the word ladder puzzle, which he called "Doublets" and published in his weekly column for Vanity Fair magazine between 1879 and 1881. In 1982 a memorial stone to Carroll was unveiled at Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works.' (Wiki) ***A first edition, first printing of this Nonesuch Press edition of the Complete Works of Lewis Carroll, with many beautiful illustrations by John Tenniel within the text, and in very nice collectable condition. A great edition for the Carroll enthusiast being a collection of all his published literary works, including the Verses and Puzzles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
