Split to leather down right side of spine, front board still attached by the cords. Name written on endpaper, old inscription, ink browned. No other inscriptions. Ffep removed. Some creasing to title page. Small brown ink stain on one page, otherwise pages in good, clean condition. Text block firm.

"Junius' poured brilliantly slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers, especially the Duke of Grafton, for a series of inc…onsistent measures which allegedly ruined England and drove the colonies 'into excesses little short of rebellion.' Vehement, lucid, frequently reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, the letters were polemical masterpieces with such extraordinary knowledge and appreciation of contemporary colonial opinion that they lent moral support to the early revolutionary cause. 'Junius' opposed the Tea Duty, but upheld the legality of the Stamp Act, and prophesied (Dec. 19, 1769) that the colonies aimed at independence" - Dictionary of American History. . Much reprinted following their original appearance in the Public Advertiser, the Junius letters caused something of a… sensation at the time for their outspoken attacks on a cosy establishment, and for their support for John Wilkes and the freedom of the press. Woodfall was, in the words of the author's preface 'exposed to an expensive, tyrannical prosecution', and the anonymous author (Sir Philip Francis?) presented him with the 'right, interest and property in these letters' by way of recompense.

Light rubbing and a few minor nicks to boards, m…oderate rubbing to extremities, front joint cracked and mended at head, rear joint starting at head, light creasing to spine, chip to lettering piece, corners bumped and worn, front hinge cracked, illegible ownership stamp to front pastedown, early ownership signature ("Wm. S. Godfree") to front free endpaper. Light toning to interior, light foxing and soiling in a few places, a few partial cracks to text block, some leaves loosening slightly at foot but secure, tear to fore-edge of leaf P6 (pp. 175-176) affecting text without loss. $200. * Later edition. A collection of 69 letters critical of the government of King George III written by popular anonymous writer and polemicist Junius and published from 1769 to 1771. 29 are addressed to "the Printer of the Public Advertiser," a London newspaper, and the rest to individuals such as Sir William Blackstone and the Duke of Grafton (a frequent target). The first authorized publication as a set was in London in 1772, with many editions, both authorized and unauthorized, following. It resulted in the prosecution of the publisher, Henry Sampson Woodfall, for seditious libel; the jury found Woodfall guilty of publishing the Letters, but Lord Mansfield, the presiding judge, declared a mistrial and Woodfall escaped imprisonment.
