Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Adrien-Marie Legendre was a French mathematician of the late 18th century who taught in various academies. He is most well-known for his work in polynomials. This work was translated by David Brewster and edited and adapted to the course of mathematical instruction in the United States by Charles Davies, instructor of mathematics at West Point. This is the second American edition. Many of these works were put together or translated to feed the need for scientific information in the New World. This particular book is in very good condition with a leather binding and spine with the black label and gilt lettering. There is a stamp of a previous owner inside the front and penciled names across: at the top of the page is Prof. A. D. Hower Teacher over some bibliographic information and written vertically towards the middle of the page is the name Drusilla Schuyler/1871/Turbotville . Interesting, as the date is prior to the date of publication and Drusilla and Prof. Hower were a married couple with Prof Hower teaching mathematics in Muncy, Pennsylvania s Normal Schools. There is some discoloration to the papers due to age and light foxing throughout. Very Good Condition: 8vo: Leather Binding and spine with black label near top of spine with gilt lettering: marbled edges on all three sides: stamped name inside front and writing on page across: light foxing throughout: scuffs and chips to the leather with some bends to the corners and cracks at the spine: Elements of Geometry and Trigonometry from the Works of A.M.
