Condition: Very Good. 6.25 x 4", full leather, raised bands, red spine label with gilt lettering ("Nisbet Metaph"), hand pagination is incomplete, textblock is 1", Covers worn/scuffed/scraped, corners bumped and worn, spine tip and outer hinges professionally repaired, lettering on spine label faint, inner hinges cracked, ffep replaced, staining to page edges and rear endpapers, occasional foxing else very good condition. These are bound handwritten lecture notes taken by John Lyon for the class taught by Rev. Dr. Charles Nisbet, the first president of Dickinson College, who served almost continually from 1784 to 1804. He taught moral philosophy, belle lettres and logic. Lyon's handwritten lecture notes (brown ink, legible) begin "Metaphysics is that science which explains the foundation of all the other sciences.for.reason it is sometimes called the first philosophy. It is divided according to its object into two parts Viz Ontology and Pneumatology." The college was founded by Dr. Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence who is considered "the father of American Psychiatry".
