His early cricket successes-especially as a spectacular fielder- led him to travel the world as a young man and to a professional engagement with Lancashire League club Nelson, where he made his home for twenty years.

Learie Constantine (1901-71) was a dashing all-rounder who embodied the very essence of West Indies cricket. In 1969 he became the first person of African descent to be given a life peerage, being created Baron Constantine, of Maraval, in Trinidad and Tobago, and of Nelson in the County Palatine of Lancaster.
