First Edition Signed
First edition of this collection of two of the great playwright's works including the long theo-philosophical meditation, Lazarus Laughed, which called for more than one hundred actors making up a masked chorus. Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine, gilt author's signature to the front panel. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. Oster with all good wishes Eugene O'Neill 1931." Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. O'Neill played an integral role in the modern movement to partially revive the classical heroic mask from ancient Greek theatre and Japanese Noh theatre. Written in 1925, Lazarus Laughed appears as a Greek tragedy, yet its underlying message is more similar to the great mystery plays of the Middle Ages. The story features characters and events following the raising of Lazarus of Bethany from the dead by Jesus and called for more than one hundred actors making up a masked chorus.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition (so stated). 8vo. Original gilt stamped blue cloth. Dust jacket with woodcut portrait of O'Neill (unclipped; soiling; a few nicks). Very good. Signed and inscribed by O'Neill on the front free endpaper: "To Albert Coates - with all friendliest good wishes! Eugene O'Neill, Nov. '29." See letter of O'Neill to Richard Madden, p. 355, in The Selected Letters, edited by Bogard & Bryer for details of the association between O'Neill and Coates. In part: ". . .I have given Albert Coates the right to make an opera of 'The Hairy Ape' - telling him that I cannot make it absolutely final until the Bucharoff option expires. . .Coates wants to use the German translation for his words. His work is well known in Germany, for one thing, and he claims it is easier to set to music in German. . .He is coming to visit me here toward the first of April when his London season is over and we will then work together on the thing. He seems like a fine guy from his letters and he certainly has a fine reputation as a director and musician. Coates (1882-1953), English conductor and composer. Inscribed by Author(s).
