Touching the Cure of Wounds by the Powder of Sympathy. With Instructions how to make the said Powder; whereby many other Secrets of Nature are unfolded. The volume is paginated as follows: [10], 152, [6] p. The volume collates as follows: A-G12 Two leaf index and one leaf advertisement at the end. Rubin / Huston 64. Wing D1438 Translation of "Discours fait en une célèbre assemblée, touchant la guérison des playes par la poudre de sympathie". Published in Paris in 1658. This is the Huston copy with his bookplate. The Huston bibliography describes this copy as follows; "Fourth Edition in English. 12mo. 141 x 80 mm. Paneled sheep c. 1664.Very Good copy. 19th century Baron's bookplate. Huston bookplate No. 1. London: printed by J.G. and are to be sold by Octavian Puleyn, jun. 1664. Relatively few copies of this edition recorded." Bound in contemporary sheep re-backed probably 19th Century. The boards scuffed. The spine in six compartments with gilt stamped decorations, five raised bands with a red lettering piece in the second compartments from the top. Internally the endpapers renewed, the leaves generally clean with some minor foxing and browning. The Powder of Sympathy was a form of sympathetic magic popular in 17th Century Europe, whereby a remedy was applied to the weapon that had caused a wound in the hope of healing the injury it had made. The method was first proposed by Rudolf Goclenius, Jr. and was later expanded upon by Sir Kenelm Digby in the present discourse. Digby s publication went through at least 29 editions in French, English, Latin, Dutch and German. The volume measures 14.5 x 8.7 x 1.7 cm. Each leaf measures 141 x 80 mm.
